To Daycare or Not to Daycare

That is the question! First, you should know that there is no wrong answer so don't stress out over this topic! Secondly, just like our doggos, not all Doggy Daycares are equal!

If your dog is high energy or tends to get into trouble if left alone for long periods, then daycare might be an option for you. Many facilities will work your dog's body and mind to keep him or her busy and entertained so that when it's time to come home, you can relax together! Get to know the daycares available in your area. Do they work with your personal hours? What about costs? Will your dog get meals? How are special needs and diets accommodated? Walks? What about discipline and enrichment?

Just like at a child's daycare, try to respect the company's policies and be respectful of their advice and time. They are offering a service, but a good daycare will be there for more than just a drop off and pickup routine. They see a different side of your pet, and have a professional perspective of how he/she acts with other animals.

Ask questions and be a hands-on parent, but also not too much! Say a quick Goodbye to your fur-baby and then be off without causing a stressful situation for your dog or others by lingering. When it's time for pickup, feel free to ask questions, but if there is something that needs to be discussed in great detail, try to make an appointment or send an email as most receptionists don't have the information your trainer or daycare staff will be better equipped to answer.

On the other hand, you shouldn't feel that your dog needs to be away from home during the day. Many dogs just aren't equipped to handle the hustle and bustle of Doggy Daycare. Maybe they are too old, or have other health problems. You can make sure that your dog gets the physical and emotional enrichment that he/she needs in other ways. More personal attention or trips together. Maybe a playdate with a friend's pet that they get along with.

Some dogs don't have the personality to be in daycare, either. They're not necessarily crowd-friendly, or they just don't tolerate other dogs very well. While that's okay too, you may want to consider training or socialization in a safe, structured environment to help get your dog more outgoing.
